The International Astronomy Olympiad


[Image of SAI] The International Olympiad of Euro-Asian Astronomical Society was founded on June, 7, 1996, as an annual astronomy competition for high-school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. According to the Founding Statutes, the Olympiad is held every year, sometime in the period from September to December, in one of the astronomical centres of the Olympiad member-states. School children of several age groups take part in the Olympiad.
[Image of BTA, winter] The first three Olympiads and the fifth Olympiad took place at the Russian State Research Centre Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) in North Caucasus on November 1-8, 1996, October 21-28, 1997, October 20-27, 1998 and October 20-27, 2000. The fourth competition took place on September 25 - October 2, 1999 in the [Dome of the 400-mm astrograph] scientific town of Nauchnyj, Republic of Crimea at the Crimean Laboratory of Moscow University Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory and Crimean "Youth Academy os Sciences" Astronomical Department.

Important note for interested participants: According to the Statutes of the Olympiad, in the case of absence of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns of this state are responsible (by a permit of the Olympic Coordinating Council) to take part in the Olympiad.
