- Investigation of the influence of quantum effects on kinetics of diffusion-free phase transitions in crystals
- Investigation of the interaction of electrons with extended defects in crystals (discovery of the photoplastic effect: the study of the occurrence of charge on dislocations in A2B6 semiconductors; the study of the occurrence of “dangling” valence bonds in dislocation cores in silicon; the study of electron spin resonance and spin dependent recombination on dislocations. For the work in the field of dislocation physics Prof. Yurii Ossipyan and Prof. Peter Hirsch (Oxford University) were awarded M.V.Lomonosov Big Gold Medal from the Russian Academy of Sciences (2005).

1. RAS Presidium Program “Quantum macrophysics” (co-ordinator) :
1.1 Project “Influence of the atomic crystalline and electron structure on the condensed matter properties” (project leader)

Spin and orbital ordering was studied in insulators and semiconductors of different dimensionality and crystalline symmetry. Physical properties of these materials were also studied. Specific features of optical, magnetic and electric properties of nanocluster materials, including materials on the base of fullerenes and nanotubes were examined.


1.2 Project “Specific features of optical properties of nano- and microcrystalline scintillators of oxide and halogenide composites“ (project leader)

The influence of crystalline sites in scintillators and activators which are not direct participants in the process of luminescence on the light yield and radiation resistance


2. PSD RAS Program “New principles of energy transformation in semiconductive structures”. Project “Structure and properties of semiconductor-anion conductor heterojunctions in composite electrodes of solid oxide fuel elements” (project leader)

Physical and electrochemical characteristics were studied for heterojunctions based on semiconductors and YSZ anion-conducting materials which provide the basis for solid oxide fuel elements, gas sensors/ and other electrochemical devices.


3. RBRF Project “Investigation of the relationship between the structure and properties of nano- and microcrystalline semiconductors” directed to the industrial use of the obtained results (project leader)

A possibility was shown for designing such scintillators on the base of oxides and fluorides of heavy metals which will outperform the currently employed radiation detectors in energy sensitivity, quick-acting, radiation strength, space resolution.
