Prof. V.D. Kulakovskii

Prof. V.D. Kulakovskii is an experimental physicist working in the field of semiconductor physics. He is the author and coauthor of more than190 scientific papers published in leading Russian and foreign scientific journals. V.D. Kulakovskii’s works on physics of excitons and electron-hole plasma in semiconductors and semiconductor heterostructures are well known in and outside Russia and have been highly appraised at a number of international conferences. In particular, he

- measured the phase exciton gas-electron-hole liquid diagram in indirect semiconductors and investigated the dependence of the liquid properties on valence band and conduction band degeneracy;
- showed that the band degeneracy is a necessary condition of forming stable multi-particle bound excitons that have no analogues in atomic physics;
-  discovered and studied the properties of exciton molecules in indirect semiconductors, silicon and germanium, and researched into the spin-polarized exciton interaction in germanium.

Since the late 1980s V.D. Kulakovskii’s scientific interests have been focused upon low-dimensional electron-hole systems in semiconductor nanostructures. In this area he has

  • investigated the multi-particle effects in dense charged and neutral electron-hole magnetoplasma in quantum wells in III-V and II-VI semiconductor heterostructures;
  • discovered deexciton states in neutral electron-hole systems with filled Landau levels and studied their properties;
  • discovered and studied bound magnetoplasmon-phonon modes;
  • investigated the structure of quantum well magneto-excitons and their interaction in weak and strong magnetic fields;
  • carried out research into the structure and optical and spin properties of excitons in quantum wires and dots, i.e. in quantum objects that will be undoubtedly required in spintronics.

In the late 1990s, along with the studies of the spin properties of quantum well excitons, V.D. Kulakovskii started research into the exciton-photon interaction in semiconductor microcavities with quantum wells and dots in the active region. Soon important results were obtained, in particular, he

  • studied the exciton-photon interaction in quasi-zero-dimensional microcavities with a single quantum dot in the active region and for the first time realized a strong exciton-photon bond regime in such microcavities;
  • studied the exciton-photon interaction in quantum dot  excitons widely spaced in microcavities;
  • studied the properties of exciton polaritons in planar microcavities with a single and several quantum wells and discovered polarization multistability of exciton polaritons under resonance excitation;
  • determined the mechanism of stimulated parametric polariton-polariton scattering;
  • experimentally realized nonequilibrium exciton polariton condensate in planar microcavities;
  • discovered quenching of Zeeman splitting in the polariton condensate placed in magnetic field.

Prof. V.D. Kulakovskii is a member of program and representative committees of several international conferences on semiconductor physics and electron properties in two-dimensional systems. In 1988 V.D. Kulakovskii was awarded the USSR State Prize in physics and in 2002 he received the Roentgen Prize.

V.D. Kulakovskii is Professor of Moscow State University and the Moscow Physical Technical Institute. He has supervised 14 Ph.D theses, two of his Ph.D. students are now Drs. Sci.
